Alternative Energy & Renewable Resources
Have you ever wondered why CVEA does not incorporate resources such as wind, solar, biomass, nuclear, or tidal energy into our generation portfolio?
CVEA reviewed many possible alternative energy solutions with the vision "to reduce or eliminate our dependence on fossil fuel for generation."
In the following article, we provide an update on several alternative technologies, where they stand today, and the cooperative's view on how the resource may help us achieve our mission and goals and ultimately best serve you, the member.
The following generation resources are addressed in our "Alternative Generation Update":
- Hydropower
- Wind
- Solar
- Biomass
- Geothermal
- Hydrokinetic Tidal
- Batteries for Storage
- CVEA-Alyeska Intertie
- Nuclear

Glennallen Diesel Plant Engine 8:
Complete Overhaul
| | |
Maintaining Reliability & Efficiency
Following nearly a year of planning, CVEA completed a scheduled major overhaul of the Glennallen Diesel Plant Engine 8 in spring 2025 to maintain reliability and efficiency, based on manufacturer recommendations.
This complete overhaul took 2.5 weeks of hands-on work completed by NC Machinery and CVEA Operators, Eli Hansen and Josh Geldersma, and Diesel Chief Plant Operator, Jason Shiell.
This proactive work helps reduce the risk of unexpected outages and costly emergency repairs while ensuring dependability for our members.
Here are some of the project highlights:
- Complete overhauls are required every 32,000 operating hours, which is the equivalent to about every 12-15 years
- The last major overhaul was completed in 2013
- This specific generator has produced power since 1998 and has used over 3.2 million gallons of diesel in its lifetime

Senior Holiday Parties
| |
Annual Christmas Tradition
Our CVEA team hosted the annual Senior Holiday parties in Valdez and Glennallen in December as part of the CVEA Community Foundation Senior Holiday Giving Program. Games, fun, local treats, and visiting were enjoyed by all!
Additionally, CVEA supported the local Meals on Wheels program in both districts by providing local grocery store gift cards, candy canes, a wrapped present, and Christmas card to be delivered with the meals around Christmas.
The Senior Holiday Giving Program is part of the CVEA Community Foundation, which is funded by capital credits that have escheated back to CVEA, investments, a Split-The-Pot fundraiser, and generous donations from CVEA members.
Thank you, CVEA members for supporting your local community!

Control Your Thermostat!
- Set your thermostat to 68 degrees during the day when you're not home.
- A lower thermostat while you're away can help 4% in total fuel and heating costs for each degree.

Unplug Devices:
Pull the plug, not the cord
- Pulling the plug and not the cord helps prevent damage to internal wires where the cord meets the plug or the outlet
- Don't risk electric shock! Pull the plug, not the cord.
